Robyn - Sexistential
Sexistential is the most ecstatic record that Robyn has ever made, the sound of one of contemporary musicās most influential artists coming home. After the club music meditations of 2018ās Honey, the album features nine, deeply playful pop songs that tie back to her era-defining Body Talk trilogy, designed to feel ālike a spaceship coming through the atmosphere at a really high speed and crash landingā, she says. āThatās how I felt, like Iād had all these experiences searching too far out into space, and now Iām crashing back into myself.ā
Co-produced mainly with longtime collaborator Klas Ć
hlund, Sexistential is emphatic and punchy, defiant about both emotional and biological pleasure, need and softness. The albumās title started life as an in-joke before she realised it said everything she wanted to say. āExploring my sensual life is the same feeling as when I make a good song,ā she explains. āItās such a beautiful kind of sensitive vibration that takes so much work to keep afloat. I feel like the purpose of my life is to stay horny - it doesnāt even have to be about sex, but itās feeling sensual and attracted to things that I enjoy, and not letting anything take over that.ā
To celebrate the news, Robyn released two new tracks from the album. Building on the success of acclaimed first single āDopamineā, new singles āTalk To Meā and āSexistentialā further reveal one of the decadeās most celebrated comebacks. āTalk To Meā ā produced by Klas Ć
hlund and Oscar Holter, and featuring Max Martin as a co-writer (their first collaboration since 2010ās āTime Machineā) ā is pure, unadulterated fun, like Robyn trying to write a Prince or Gap Band song but underpinned with uber-contemporary production. āI wrote it during the pandemic when there was no way to be physical,ā Robyn says. āI like talkers, that turns me on.ā
The album news comes among a run of recent public appearances - including a performance on CNNās New Yearās Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen and two sold-out shows at Brooklyn Paramount - that have created huge anticipation and speculation around new Robyn music. Whether performing with David Byrne to celebrate Saturday Night Live's fiftieth anniversary, making show-stopping live appearances with the likes of Charli xcx and Gracie Abrams, collaborating with Yung Lean and Charli for a version of Bratās ā360,ā or soundtracking Acne Studio's 2025 Paris show, Robyn continues to shape and influence popular culture in truly unique ways.
