Miso Extra - Earcandy
Miso Extra announces her debut album āEarcandyā with āCertifiedā on Thursday 23rd of January. The track is the third offering from her album, which is due May 16th via Transgressive Records.
Ā
Certified follows 6Music A-Listed āGood Kisses feat. Metronomyā, and āSlow Down feat. DJ Boringā which was released last summer. Miso Extra most recently wrapped up supporting shows for Yannis & The Yaw, Rejjie Snow and appeared at Pitchfork London alongside Tierra Whack. Headline UK dates are announced for June 2025, and the track premieres tonight at New Music Fix with Tom & Deb, 6Music who also made it their Obsessed track.
Ā
Her critically acclaimed EP āMSGā saw 6Music A-List singles, whilst also alighting the airwaves across Radio 1, 1Xtra and Apple Music. She has received praise from titles such as The Guardian, CRACK, Dazed, THE FACE, DORK, NME, The FADER, Evening Standard, The Line of Best Fit, MusicTech and Notion, and has adorned stages at Glastonbury Festival (DJ set), Pitchfork Festival, BBC Introducing at
Reading & Leeds Festivals, Primavera Weekender and The Great Escape. She previously supported Thundercat on his UK tour at O2 Brixton Academy, London and Marc Rebillet.
Ā
āThis record is a document of music-making as catharsis,ā Miso Extra says. āIām working through my experiences of love, alienation and empowerment while inviting others in to share the process. By the end, Iāve become a whole new Miso.ā
Ā
Across 12 tracks, co-produced by Miso Extra herself and featuring collaborations from DJ Boring, Metronomy, AK Paul, Samo, Tyson and MICHELLE, Miso takes us on a journey of lovelorn vulnerability, growth and self-empowerment, traversing the K-Pop and UK Garage references of the earworming āPOPā to the lovesick lyricism and bass-heavy R&B beats of āGood Kissesā, synth-house swing of āCertifiedā, and reverb-laden ā80s melodics of āGhostlyā. āI wanted to make a self-aware pop record, full of the songs Iād want to listen to when I was growing up,ā she says. āItās about growing through your mistakes and not being afraid to get things wrong. There are some deep messages in there but itās surrounded by sweet earcandy ā that spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.ā
Ā
Miso also sees her music as forming part of the Misoverse ā an anime-inspired space of creative exploration. āI always have to do a lot of code-switching in different situations and so I wanted to reflect that in my music,ā she says. āThe Misoverse is where I can explore all the different musical sides of myself, with all my influences present and me as the hero of the story. Itās umami for the ears ā deliciousness to listen to.ā
Ā
On Earcandy, Miso expands her sonic universe to produce the fullest expression of her restlessly roving sound. Decamping to Damon Albarnās Studio 13 in London over summer 2024, Miso began working with Grammy-winning engineer Riccardo Damian, who has previously collaborated with Mark Ronson, Ezra Collective, Jorja Smith and Sampha. āHe was my Mr Miyagi, I learned so much from Riccardo during the whole process,ā Miso says. āPlus working in Studio 13 was so inspiring since Iām such a Gorillaz fan and you can channel their energy there, as well as feel the influence of other people who have used the space from Erykah Badu to Paul McCartney.ā
