Citizen - Youth (10 Year Anniversary Edition)
To celebrate 10 years of YOUTH, Citizen and Run For Cover Records have teamed up to completely update the bandās debut LP. Since itās initial release in 2013, the songs that make up Youthās tracklist have been staples in mixtapes, playlists and record collections for listeners chasing what felt like a long-lost feeling in alternative music. YOUTH takes notes from the headbanging tempo of grunge, the hazy reverb of shoegaze, and the catharsis of emo together to make something deeply personal and profound. Songs like opener āRoam the Roomā and the anthemic sing-a-long āThe Summerā have been soundtracked a thousand stagedives at live shows, while pensive and moody songs like āFigure You Outā and āSleepā offer brief, downtempo respites with blissful melodies. YOUTH also features Citizenās two most popular songs: āThe Night I Drove Aloneā builds from a quiet, isolated guitar strum into vocalist & lyricist Mat Kerekesā diary-like confessional, exploding mid-song into a full-band barrage, while āHow Does It Feel?ā incorporates dreamy shoegaze elements into a somber mid-tempo wall of sound.
This definition meant taking the entire process home to Toledo, Ohio ā the Glass City ā and creating everything in-house. Recorded in vocalist Mat Kerekesā home studio in his garage, Citizenās need to continue moving forward creatively went hand in hand with their desire to be fully in control of their creative destiny. The new process afforded the band time to focus on each songās individual mood, making their signature blend of aggression and melody all the more pronounced, and even capturing appealing imperfections. The result is an album that represents the membersā vision in its purest form, something that feels distinctly Citizen while also marking the start of a fresh chapter.
One of the most immediately striking elements of the direction on Life In Your Glass World is the bandās attention to rhythm. Many of the songs feature undeniably danceable beats and sharp, groove-laden guitar lines, which give both the barnburners and the brooding atmospheric tracks a pulsating heart. The bandās desire to assert themselves is palpable both in the music and Kerekesā lyrics, mirroring not only their creative frustrations but also a long year of personal upheavals. Itās fitting for Life In Your Glass World, a record that proves Citizenās true identity is rooted in the raw energy of constant evolution.
